Requirements for Starting a Chapter

To establish a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an institution must:

  • Have at least one faculty or staff member of the institution serve as a chapter advisor.
  • Have college support for establishing a Phi Theta Kappa chapter on campus.
  • Agree to provide an electronic file of eligible students to be loaded into member reporting software and agree to allow students to complete applications and pay fees online.

United States Institutions

  • Offer one or more of the following associate degree programs: Associate of Arts, Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science.
  • Maintain or have earned official candidacy status from one of the following accrediting agencies:
    • Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
    • New England Association of Schools and Colleges
    • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
    • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
    • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
    • Western Association of Schools and Colleges

Canadian Institutions

  • Offer a Certificate, Diploma, or University Transfer program.
  • Maintain or have earned official candidacy status from the Canadian government.

International Institutions

Phi Theta Kappa determines the eligibility of other international institutions on a case-by-case basis.

Candidate Colleges

Colleges denoted as official candidates for accreditation are given a five-year charter, at the end of which the college must be fully accredited or the chapter is retired.

Colleges not meeting the full qualifications may contact us to receive an evaluation to charter.
